Reminder: Active Emerican Idol Contest!

Here’s a friendly reminder for you Kids who may not have seen this post last time.

Note: This contest is being held by Active Ride Shop and IFILM, not Emerica.

Active Ride Shop and IFILM are excited to launch the very first Emerican Idol, an online competition to find the best amateur skateboarder! Amateurs from across the U.S. will submit their films, which will be posted on IFILM, and fans and pro skaters will vote each week for their favorites.

One winner will be named the Emerican Idol and will receive a Grand Prize, which will include product from Emerica, Baker and Krew. The winner may also be invited to select key events in Southern California to meet and hang with top pro skaters and a chance to enter the Am Contest.

Winning entries will be celebrated and featured on IFILM as examples of some of the top up-and-coming amateur skaters to watch for. Your first step to a career in professional skateboarding just got easier.

The search for America’s top amateur skateboarder began on May 1, 2005 and ends on August 1, 2005. Top entries will be posted on IFILM and the winners will be announced on September 1, 2005.

Travis La
Denver, Colorado

This month, while digging through our stacks of Sponsor Me videos, I stumbled across this little gem that was sent in by Travis La. The first thing that I noticed was that Travis is from Denver, which has really good spots that, in return, produce some really good skaters. After watching this video, I could see that Travis is one of those skaters. He skates with a smooth style and chooses to ride unique terrain, which got me stoked, because I love seeing new spots. As far as Sponsor Me videos go, Travis La’s video is short and sweet. I would have liked to have seen a few more lines and maybe a few more hammers, but overall, Travis rips! Like I said, Denver has a really good crew of skaters, and Travis is definitely a standout in his city. Hopefully, we will be seeing more from him in the near future. —Jeff Henderson

Since it’s way too hot to skate all day here in Arizona, we at Cowtown Skateboards have decided to move our Go Skateboarding Day celebration into the night! On Tuesday, June 21, we will have a 21% Off Everything Sale throughout the day in all three of our stores in Phoenix, Glendale and Chandler, then we will close early and set up for the night’s events.

Emerica Image

First, at 8:00 p.m., we will start a free barbeque for everyone directly behind the Cowtown Skateboards downtown shop at 5024 N. Central AVE in Phoenix. Shortly after that, we will premiere former Arizona local Shane Heyl’s new Shake Junt video, featuring the talents of the Baker team (Andrew Reynolds, Erik Ellington, Spanky, Bryan Herman, Braydon Szafranski, Jim Greco and Jeff Lenoce) plus Elissa Steamer, Mike Maldonado, Ryan Nixx, Pete Eldridge, Jon Flip, and Mike Hubert.

Right after the premiere, Cowtown’s Skateboarding Scavenger Hunt will start. We will hide vouchers for all kinds of FREE skate stuff all over the downtown Phoenix area, and you will get a map that gives you clues where to find it! Come check out a good skate video, eat some food, have a drink, and then go skateboarding and product hunting all over downtown Phoenix.

Remember, you must be present at the video premiere to get your map. See you all there!

After poring over the hundreds of questions you Kids asked him, we narrowed them down to (a still sizable) 50 or so, and rang Hermdog up for some answers. Thanks to all who participated. Stay tuned, cuz future Member’s Only interviews are in the works. Enjoy!

Bored #8

Title: Bored
Publisher: JP
Issue Number: 8
Page Size: 5.5" x 8.5"
Page Count: 16
Printing method: Black and white photocopy.
Price: Email the publisher.
Email: boredzine at (Use the @ symbol with no spaces around it instead of the word "at".)
Address: 1123 9th ST # 7, Santa Monica, California 90403

I just got a package of six issues of this here Bored zine out of Santa Monica, California. (Never heard of the place. Does it have any skateboarding history?) Knowing that you don’t want to read any long-winded tripe here on the Web, right now we’re only going to focus on the most recent issue, #8.

It opens up with the publisher, JP, spewing a long-winded editorial (that no one will ever read) about turning 30 and why this issue is so late. Just kiddin’, JP. The issue then proceeds on into a nice bunch of funny-ass stories, including a Null Blame the Filmer video premiere report, a Bobby Puleo Clues About the Rest of the World art show review, a hilarious Beastie Boys To the 5 Boroughs CD review, a Carbondale Run bowl contest article (complete with spit splat-shaped photos), a scathing critique of contemporary mainstream skateboarding called Skateboarding Isn’t Cool Anymore, and more that I don’t want to give away in advance. Except this:

They even threw in a review of our This is Skateboarding DVD, in which they call out Justin Regan for penning a bunch of lame mainstream-oriented hype on the back of the box to help move copies via mom at Best Buy. Ha-ha! Better keep it real next time, Reganator! The DVD itself got a good review, though.

Overall, Bored is a well put-together and variety-packed, street-level brochure straight from skateboarding’s heart. You could do well to investigate. —Garry Davis.
