First-Ever Street Contest
In Summer 1983, I attended San Francisco Streetstyle, which was the first-ever street contest. It launched a contest format that exploded in popularity throughout the rest of the ’80s and continues even today. San Francisco Streetstyle was held on a paved path in Golden Gate Park with a bunch of little wedge ramps, a parking block and nary a tranny in sight. Tommy Guerrero won, I got fifth—and we were both ams! In this photo, which was taken by Craig Ramsay, I was doing a 540 slide on flat ground.
